Drug efflux proteins of Candida were discovered nearly two decades ago and are now turning out as the key elements in the acquisition of tolerance towards antifungal drugs. CDR1, the first ABC transporter to be discovered in human pathogenic yeast was characterized during 1993-94, followed by its several other homologues. Soon, dozens of research groups around the globe started to explore various aspects of CDR genes and proteins, which resulted in myriad of excellent research publications. This augmented our knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of genetic regulation of these transporters and a deeper understanding of multidrug recognition and transport of drugs by them. We are only beginning to unravel the complex mechanisms behind regulation of accumulation and extrusion of xenobiotics as well as therapeutic agents, in eukaryotic cells. These 20 years of brainstorming and scientific learning in the field of ABC drug transporters deserves a celebration which is being hosted as a scientific meeting in the beautiful locales of New Delhi. We expect not only CDR researchers but everyone working on similar efflux pumps in yeasts, plants or mammalian cells to actively participate, and make this event a huge success.
